>> It seems like Ford keeps putting the Mustang in the auto show circuit on their side a lot lately. Probably because the car itself hasn't changed much, but they have been talking engines. Now, at the L.A. Show I showed you an all-new V6 that has one horsepower more than the Camero's direct injection V6. Here is another engine story. Now, Ford at Detroit is rolling out a new 5.0-liter. Remember the V8, up until now for the last handful of years has been a 4.6. It was a more high-tech engine in the old 302-based V8. Well, that 5.0-liter thing is kind of important especially when you want get more power out of an engine. A little more capacity never hurts. That is where the 5.0-liter number is back now. This V8 is going to give you 412 horsepower, a big bump over the last GTV8 and 390 foot pounds of torque. You are going to get good mileage also, 17/25 is what they are projecting. How they got there is a variety of technology. These are aluminum heads and aluminum block with iron cylinder liners. The way they have worked out the spacing on the heads is wide enough to have these vertical intakes right across the top here for good breathing efficiency. And as they are doing on the new V6 lots of anti-friction technologies get more out of the engine, so there is no dramatic thing going on here. No super charger, no turbo, not even direct injection in this case, but they do have a pretty advanced independent variable cam timing system to let all the cams work basically on their own, intake and exhaust and be independent beyond that. There is also electric power assist on the steering so you get rid of a parasitic loss from a hydraulic pump that is belted up to the front of the engine. And overall because of the lightweight materials and other engineering they have got 20-percent less weight on this overall 5.0-liter power plant than the old 302-based one that was around for decades. So, all of that combined for a car gets up out of its own way better and uses less gas while doing it.
