As the new school year begins, shake off those summer cobwebs with a few educational smartphone apps designed to jump-start your students' learning. In this Tech Minute, CNET's Kara Tsuboi reports on some of her favorite back-to-school apps.

StudyBlue is a free app for both iPhone and Android user that lets to integrate their own custom flashcards, whether it's for vocabulary word, science terms or historical dates. Students can easily review for an exam with just a tap of a smartphone screen or use the browser version to search for other flashcard sets created by other students. Bill Nye, the science guy, famous for his bow tie in 1990's TV shows celebrating his 20th anniversary with the release of a new iPhone and iPad app. It's free to download and offers an interactive experience as students can poke through the contents of his desk, watch videos and follow instructions for home experiments. Finally, Duolingo, is a must-download free app on Androids and iPhones for people looking to learn a foreign language. Students learn one of 6 offered languages by helping to translate real webpages at the readability level. In San Francisco, I'm Kara Tsuboi, CNET.com for CBS News.
