CNET Update: Samsung buys SmartThings to become a smart home hub

2:55 /

Samsung gears up for the upcoming smart home wars, Intel creates heartbeat sensing earbuds, and Barnes & Noble teases the next Nook.

[MUSIC] Samsung wants to control your home of tomorrow. I'm Bridget Carey, and this is your CNet update. Today's smart home technology sounds like what our parents used to call the world of tomorrow. You can control your lights when you're on vacation. Get notifications when your kid comes home from school. And have your AC start to cool down the house when you leave work. The smart home movement is growing fast and Samsung is getting involved. Samsung announced it's acquiring a company called SmartThings. It sells a kit that makes it easy for your smart home to communicate with objects that are connected to your home internet network. And SmartThings is not limited to this kit. It's an open platform that has grown to add in partners. Like Belkin and Phillips, it supports more than 1,000 devices and 8,000 apps. We have a review of it at CNET if you want to learn more on how it works. SmartThings will still exist as its own entity under the Samsung umbrella. The smart home is the new tech battleground. We have Apple that's hungry to be the control hub of your devices with its new home kit software. And Google bought Nest Labs, which makes a smart home thermostat and smoke detector. But smart things give Samsung a new edge in the battle, especially when this tech gets added into Samsung's home appliances. Like dishwashers and refrigerators. Along with the home are tech accessories also want to track us. We're now seeing ear buds that measure your heart rate. You know, in case you need to calculate just how much a song gets you pumped up. Intel worked with SMS Audio, a headphone company that's owned by the rapper 50 Cent to create BioSport In-Ear Headphones, These track your heart rate while you exercise. LG also has created Heart Rate Monitor Earphones. But LG's have their own batteries that needs to be recharged [INAUDIBLE] These SMS audio ones get all their power from the headphone jack. Which makes it much more practical to use. The Biosport in ear headphones will come out later this year. But there was no price announced yet. And in other tech, coming soon. Barnes & Noble is teasing its next Nook tablet, that it's making with Samsung. A video posted online shows people overreacting with their love for the Galaxy that they hold in their hands. For this. This is absolutely amazing. This is so awesome. If it looks familiar, it's because Barnes and Noble pretty much copied Amazon's fire phone teaser user video, and then they ran to make Joe and grumpy cat in the commercial, because you know, for the kids. Barnes and Noble will have to do better on Wednesday when they debut the galaxy tab for. And explain why we need a special Nook version of the Galaxy Tab. That's your Tech News update. For more details, head to CNET.com. From our studios in New York, I'm Bridget Carey. [MUSIC]
