ViewSonic wants you to try its ViewPad 7 Android tablet for free

Free Android tablet? Don't mind if we do. ViewSonic's new initiative is looking to get people playing with its ViewPad 7 slate, promising a full refund if they're not impressed.

Free Android tablet? Don't mind if we do. ViewSonic has kicked off a new initiative to get people playing with its ViewPad 7 slate, promising a full refund if they're not impressed.

Okay, so that's not quite a free tablet: it's just a money-back guaranteed scheme, complete with up to £10 to cover the costs of return postage and packaging. There's also unintended comedy in an initiative whose website includes the prominent sentence, "Simply purchase a ViewPad 7 from any authorised retailer and try it for free!"

Even so, it's a sign the company is confident in its wares. "There are many people that have heard about the new tablet trend but for various reasons have not yet dived in," says ViewSonic European marketing manager James Coulson. "Working with Google, we want people to have a good first tablet experience risk-free."

We reviewed the ViewPad 7 in November last year, and had mixed feelings about its appeal. It's certainly affordable -- the £400 price has now fallen to £325 RRP, which is closer to £250 if you shop around online.

Its Android 2.2 software was okay at the time but has since been superseded by 3.0 Honeycomb. The ViewPad 7 also lacked support for Flash, and sported an underwhelming 800x480-pixel resolution screen too, with noticeably poorer viewing angles than Apple's iPad. At least it's not as bad as the more recent ViewPad 10s , which is an absolute dog.

With that in mind, while the offer of a 30-day money-back guarantee is generous on ViewSonic's part, if you're in the market for a tablet, you might want to try and get hands-on with some of the ViewPad's rivals during that month too, to help you reach a decision.

ViewSonic says it will be selling the ViewPad 7 at next month's Gadget Show Live event in Birmingham on its stand, complete with the try for free offer. The offer closes on 30 April.
