Sony Xperia Go outdoorsy phone on O2 this month
The Sony Xperia Go is expected to come out in the next few weeks. Read up on the specs here.
The O2, suggesting the UK is mere weeks away from seeing the rugged, splash-happy smart phone in high street shops.has been given a 'coming soon' date of July by oxygenated operator
SoMobile spotted the listing, which also promises 50GB of free cloud storage forever, so long as you splash out (geddit) before the end of the year.
I've not been able to find the Xperia Go listed on any other operators' websites, though I'll keep an eye open for any developments.
The Xperia Go might look like any other glassy, glossy mobile, but unlike its fragile brethren this smart phone is designed to survive in adverse conditions, such as
being dropped in the toilet taking on water during an Arctic climbing expedition.
The 8.9mm-thick phone has a resistance rating of IP67, meaning it offers total protection from dust, and shrugs off water immersion between 15cm and 1m deep.
While it'll survive being chomped on by a disobedient pet hound, the specs on offer here are rather modest. The 3.5-inch display has a 320x480-pixel resolution, so this phone won't be as good as its high-end relatives when it comes to things like web browsing and watching hi-def video. The 1GHz processor is unlikely to offer much grunt, either, and don't expect award-winning snaps from the 5-megapixel camera.
As far as software goes, you get Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is about to be two versions behind the latest edition -- . Sony's promised that the Go is 'upgradeable' to , but that's little guarantee that an update will actually be arriving any time soon.
Would you appreciate a phone you could dunk in your tea? Or would you rather get a more powerful phone and wrap it up in a protective case? Let me know in the comments or on our Facebook wall.
