Sony overtakes HTC in UK Android sales, Samsung still top

Sony jumped to second place in UK Android smart phone sales for the last three months, while Samsung held its lead.

Some stats just in: Sony is the second biggest seller of Android smart phones in the UK, leapfrogging HTC. That's according to numbers from Mobile Magazine, Android Central reports.

Sony sold 500,000 Android phones in the last 3 months here in Blighty, while HTC managed 440,000. But both are way behind Samsung, which sold a crazy 3.2 million Android blowers. That's six times what Sony managed. Break out the champers, Samsung, you're top dog.

Sony has been on a big Android drive recently. It launched the official Bond phone -- the Xperia T -- a budget handset in the guise of the Xperia E , and hinted it has something very special indeed up its sleeve for CES in January.

"We will create in the near future a flagship Sony model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S3," Sony exec Dennis van Schie told the Financial Times recently . He also hinted the company could start making Windows Phone phones soon.

Sony is rumoured to be working on the next Nexus smart phone for Google. Nexus devices are usually flagship Android products, so the fact Google has chosen Sony shows how much faith it must have in the company -- if that rumour proves to be true, of course.

No doubt all the product placement in Skyfall won't have hurt Sony either.

HTC, meanwhile, has been struggling of late . Its latest, the HTC Butterfly , looks like it'll be a worthy challenger to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 , but it won't come to the UK. Which is annoying, seeing as it's a 5-inch, 1080p beast, with an 8-megapixel camera.

HTC is also rumoured to have an iPhone-challenging M7 in the works, as well as a 6-inch smart phone that'll make the Note 2 look like small beer. Here's hoping the company can regain some of its former glory.

Does Samsung deserve its top spot? What do you think of Sony's recent phones? And who was more intrusive in Skyfall: Sony or Heineken? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
