Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is Ice Cream Sandwich sequel

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Tab, powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Get set for a Samsung sequel. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), announced today, is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Tab -- Sammy's first tablet -- and is powered by the latest version of Android, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The new Tab 2's 7-inch screen boasts 1,024x600-pixel resolution. Inside there's a 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. It includes 802.11n Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct to link with other devices.

Ice Cream Sandwich offers faster performance and new features such as Face Unlock, which unlocks the Tab 7.0 when you look at it.

The camera is a 3-megapixel jobby, with a second camera at the front for video chats. You can video chat with more than one person at a time via Google+ hangouts, or chat away with ChatON instant messaging.

Other built-in apps include Samsung's range of Hub apps, which access your music, ebooks and games. The Tab 7.0 also shows off new services from Samsung, including a new video hub, offering 1,000 movies to buy or rent.

Samsung's TouchWiz interface has been tarted up too, including Hub widgets and a new service called S Suggest. S Suggest offers suggestions for new apps you might like, based on your previous tastes.

And AllShare Play makes its debut on the Tab 2. AllShare Play lets you play, live-stream or transfer music, movies and games to your Tab from your PC, other Samsung smart devices or from your online storage.

You can now get a Galaxy Tab in almost any size, from the Tab 2 7-inch model to the Galaxy Tab 7.7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1. There's even talk of an 11.6-inch Tab for the tablet-using giant.

The Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) comes with a choice of 8GB, 16GB or 32GB memory, with prices adjusted accordingly. It also offers a slot for a microSD card for an extra 32GB. You can also choose from 3G and WiFi versions.

I'll keep you posted on prices and release dates. Tantalised by the Tab 2? Could this be the first decent Ice Cream Sandwich slate? Tell me how excited you are in the comments or on the CNET UK Facebook page.
