The PlayStation 4 went on sale at midnight last night, joining the Xbox One in next-gen console combat -- if you can find one, as many retailers are already sold out.

At the time of writing Currys, Amazon and Game have sold out of the console on its own, but you can still buy it with game bundles if you're willing to pony up a lot more money.

You can get the PS4 with FIFA 14, Need for Speed: Rivals and Battlefield 4 for £529, or throw in Knack too for £580. That's a full hundred quid more than the console on its own, which can cost as little as £350.

And even if you have ordered the console, there's no guarantee you'll enjoy some festive gaming: orders placed for either the the PS4 and Xbox One in the last two weeks won't turn up in time for Christmas .

If you have managed to get your hands on a brand spanking new console, you can do more than play games. Here's a list of the entertainment apps available on the PS4 available here in the UK:

  • BBC iPlayer
  • BBC Sports
  • Demand 5
  • IGN
  • BBC News
  • Netflix
  • Amazon / Lovefilm
  • Music Unlimited
  • Video Unlimited VidZone

Excited gamers queued at shops at midnight, with Game's pop-up shop in London handing over the first consoles to Blaine Smith of Bedford -- the first person to pre-order a PS4 back in February -- and Imran Chowdri of London, who has been queuing since Tuesday. That's them pictured above.

The rival Xbox One hit shops last week, shifting a million in a day -- but British bookie Paddy Power reckon the PS4 will be the winner in the Christmas sales race .
