Nokia C6-01 gives you Symbian 3 on the cheap, not to be confused with C6

The Nokia C6-01 is the affordable end of its new Symbian 3 phones, but that doesn't mean it skimps on features -- Nokia's packed them into this cheap smart phone.

You may think you're seeing double, but the Nokia C6-01 isn't the same as the Nokia C6 that only just landed in shops. It's just that Nokia is running out of names for its offspring faster than George Foreman -- this is a completely different phone, with the brand-new Symbian 3 OS and much more besides.

If you can keep them straight, the C6-01 has plenty of features that differentiate it from its older sibling. A 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen has a feature called ClearBlack, which aims to help make it more visible in bright light.

You'll also get an 8-megapixel camera with two LED photo lights, and support for the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 standards. When you're out and about, HSPA will give you fast Web surfing over 3G, too.

The C6-01's home screens can be stuffed with widgets so you can see live updates from your Facebook and Twitter feeds, as well as preview your email and texts with ease. Throw in A-GPS and the ever-underrated FM radio, and the C6-01 is a true feature-fest.

Nokia's touchscreen phones, however, don't tend to be the most fun to use. The update to Symbian 3 should help things somewhat, with Nokia promising "a noticeable reduction in prompts". That means it's cut the seemingly endless pop-up notifications, approval requests and warnings that made downloading apps and hooking up to Wi-Fi such a pain on previous Nokia phones.

Nokia's not known for wafer-thin phones, and the C6-01 looks a little chunky at 14mm thick. But we'll have to get our hands on it to know for sure, so look out for our hands-on photos from Nokia World, currently bathing in our darkroom in preparation for delivery by pony express straight to your Interweb portal.

The C6-01 lands in shops this winter for around €260 (£220).
