The Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 hit shops today, bringing you Windows 8.1 and free Skype phone calls to actual phones.

Here in Britain you can buy the new Surface from Argos, Currys, Game, John Lewis and PC World, or direct from Microsoft.

The Surface 2 runs on Windows 8.1 RT, the tablet-focused version of Windows that only lets you download tablet apps. It starts at £360 for the model with 32GB of storage. The Surface Pro 2, which runs full-bore Windows 8.1 like a PC and lets you download any app you like, starts at £800.

Both come with a year of Skype Out calls, which allows you to phone landlines from the Skype app, for free.

The new tablets are the follow-up to the original Microsoft Surface and Surface Pro 2 , and show off the updated Windows 8.1 software. If you already own a Windows 8 device there's been some teething troubles with the update, which evokes some of the more traditional elements of older Windows.

The Surface 2 enters an increasingly crowded tablet market. Nokia this morning announced the Nokia Lumia 2520 , a 10.1-inch Windows 8.1 RT tablet expected to go on sale later this year. And later today, Apple is set to unveil a new iPad and iPad mini .

Is the new Surface 2 a worthy rival to the iPad and Android tablets? Tell me your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page.
