McAfee delivered a one-two punch Tuesday, introducing its McAfee Data Loss Prevention security appliance and a statistic-laden report on corporate data loss.
McAfee delivered a one-two punch Tuesday, introducing its McAfee Data Loss Prevention security appliance and a statistic-laden "Datagate" report on potential fallout from corporate data loss.
McAfee teamed up with Datamonitor to crunch the numbers on over 1,400 corporate users worldwide. The highlights include: 67 percent of companies surveyed experienced the loss of confidential data in the past year that brought serious damage to their brand - with 33 percent of them noting a major security breach could potentially put them out of business. The report notes that companies spent an average of $1.82 million to deal with the data loss, paying for technology to remediate and recover data, in addition to rebuilding customer relations.
Meanwhile, the report further notes that 23 percent of data loss cases were due to malicious activity, such as disgruntled employees stealing customer lists or trade secrets. The U.S. ranked higher than other regions of the world, nearly 30 percent, in the perception that data leakage occurred for malicious reasons, verses unintentional or accidental causes.
The report notes 54 percent of companies surveyed debrief and monitor employees for data loss, when they leave the company. However, the figure is much higher when companies bring in new employees. Seventy-four percent indicated they provide training programs to increase employee awareness about data leakage.
McAfee's report has several weeks to resonate with corporate users, before its Data Loss Prevention appliance hits the market next month. The appliance aims to monitor corporate networks for data leakage, as employees dock aboard with non-company issued devices from smart phones to PDAs.
