HTC tests Android 2.3 on Desire, as Three brings Gingerbread to Desire HD
HTC's testing its Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Desire, which means a software upgrade shouldn't be far off. Gingerbread will soon be available for the Desire HD on Three too.
HTC's testing Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the HTC's official Facebook page, and means Desire owners hungry for some warm, cakey Gingerbread may not have long to wait.. The news comes via a status update on
HTC had declared that it, but just hours later it , saying that the hugely popular smart phone would in fact be getting the latest, greatest version of Google's mobile operating system.
The original reason given for not bringing Gingerbread to the Desire was that the phone wouldn't have enough memory to handle both the 2.3 update and HTC's Sense user interface. We're desperately hoping that updating to Gingerbread won't cause our Desire to spontaneously combust.
Gingerbread isn't a massive upgrade from Android 2.2 Froyo, but adds a few interface tweaks, and support for video calling using a front-facing camera.
More importantly, though, continued updates show that a manufacturer isn't ready to abandon a phone yet. We were pretty miffed at the idea of HTC halting updates for the Desire when it's only about a year old.
