Hashtag hits the red carpet with dress that tweets
Is that a hashtag on Nicole Scherzinger's hips? CuteCircuit's haute couture gown for the social-networking celeb makes its debut at a launch party for U.K. 4G mobile network EE.
As fashion fiend Tim Gunn likes to say, you can never go wrong with a classic black dress. And if it's fitted with 2,000 LEDs and broadcasts tweets in real time, all the better, right Tim?
Nicole Scherzinger took that fashion rule to heart when she showed up at a launch party for new British 4G mobile network EE last week wearing a haute couture gown that flashes like a light show on top while displaying scrolling tweets on the skirt below.
CuteCircuit, a London-based fashion company that designs interactive clothing, created the electronic dress especially for the former Pussycat Dolls singer and current "X-Factor" judge. EE commissioned the gown for its big launch party, with tweets that made it onto the techno-tulle sent to the hashtag #tweetthedress and vetted by the tweeps at @ee.
"Scherzy I love you, Nicole," reads one tweet that can be seen in the below video report on the dress.
Rechargeable by USB, the glamorous getup consists of a mini-skirt-length dress under a layered ball-length gown made of black chiffon. The whole thing not only sparkles with LEDs, but with thousands of Swarovski crystal beads.
Appropriately, the dress made its debut at the Battersea Power Station, a decommissioned coal-fired power station located on the south bank of London's River Thames that's a well-known landmark.
While the gown, made an, ahem, powerful fashion statement, it's not the only social-networking garment of its kind. Last year, a couple of Microsofties came up with adesigned to project the wearer's Internet goings-on.
CuteCircuit has previously shown off anthat lets you broadcast anything from tweets and Facebook statuses to animations right on your chest.
A ScanMe T-shirtthat links to your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter profiles and can include your latest status message, a way to e-mail you, or even your phone number.
Then, of course, there are the Adidas kicks with a. I would have loved to see Scherzinger pair those sneaks with her fancy CuteCircuit dress for a bit of edge, but I can just see Mr. Gunn roll his eyes at the thought.
