The Windows 8 upgrade program is designed to encourage you to keep buying desktop PCs and laptops rather than keeping hold of your money until the new software arrives.

Our source told CNET that if you buy a new machine running Windows 7 Home Basic or higher between June and January, Microsoft will give you a cut-price rate on Windows 8 Pro.

That's just in time for the release preview version of Windows 8, a sneak peek promised by Microsoft in June. There'll be three different versions: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT for tablets .

The deal kicks off on 2 June in the US. When you buy your new computer, you'll get a coupon for Windows 8. Actual prices are yet to be revealed, but we'll keep you posted as we learn more.

Windows 8 is the next generation of Microsoft's operating system. It's a radical departure in design, based around home screens of large colourful 'live tiles', as seen on phones using Microsoft's Windows Phone software. Windows 8 will power tablets as well as computers.
