Gallery of America's top Androids has some surprises

You might not expect some of the entries on the list of 10 most popular Android-based devices that are knocking around our pockets and purses.

The most popular Android devices come in all shapes, sizes, and yes, flavors. Josh Long/CNET

Recently, the folks at Handset Detection pulled together some data to figure out the top 10 Android devices in use in the United States as of February 2013, and the results revealed a surprising diversity of smartphones (and a few tablets) that include both the hottest phones of the past six months as well as some classics that it seems we just can't bear (or afford) to put down.

I decided to dig through the top 10 American Android devices to try and figure out what makes us pick and stick with the droids we love.

There's clearly a strong correlation between the list and the most critically acclaimed and buzzed-about phones like the Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy S3. It also seems clear that the list is defined -- at least in part -- by those pesky two-year contracts we will agree to in exchange for big discounts on handsets.

Finally, it seems that handsets that are a big deal for whatever reason (like being the first to offer 4G in a market) and cost a premium at the onset also tend to stay in our pockets a little longer.

Take a look at the gallery of the top 10 American Androids below and let us know in the comments which new phones you expect to be on this list in six months or a year from now.
