Dell jumps into $499 notebooks

From now until Thursday, Dell is hawking an Inspiron notebook for $499, a price point pioneered earlier this summer by , Acer and Toshiba.

The notebook comes with a Celeron 350 processor, a 30MB hard drive an 256GB of memory. Ordinarily it costs $649 but comes with a $150 instant rebate at the moment. The $150 instant rebate is also being applied to other Inspirons.

Although Dell can undercut competitors because it builds PCs to order, the company actually concentrates most of its efforts on selling to the mid- and upper-ends of the market.
