Colbert to succeed Letterman; Internet rejoices

Twitter is alive with reactions to the (now official) news that Stephen Colbert will be the next "Late Show" host on CBS. Crave's Eric Mack seeks to capture the gestalt.

It didn't take long for CBS to pick a replacement for late-night legend David Letterman, who announced his retirement from the network last week. And it's taken even less time for a seemingly huge chunk of the Internet to respond to the official announcement Thursday that Stephen Colbert will take over the helm of "Late Show" next year.

I created a column in TweetDeck to monitor all incoming tweets with the keyword "Colbert," and the stream proceeded to speed by in an old-school roadrunner-legs-style blur. I couldn't make out a single word, even with all my recent training on Spritz.

Tweets ran the gamut from a multitude of simple congratulations and general rejoicing:

To the more conspiracy-minded:

Some other celebrities are sarcastically seeking to capture some of Colbert's magical mojo:

And a few wise digital sages offered perspective on the announcement with respect to how it fits into the state of our democracy:

Even some of the targets of Colbert's lambasting over the years, such as former Presidential candidate Herman Cain, offered up their thoughts right away:

But perhaps the most powerful endorsement of CBS' choice for new late-night host comes from the man who helped build the Colbert Nation to what it is today, his former employer Jon Stewart. Last night, before the announcement was official, Stewart told Vulture that Colbert would be "remarkable" in the new role.

"He's wonderful in 'Colbert Report,' but he's got gears he hasn't even shown people yet," said Stewart.

When Colbert takes over, it won't be the first time he's wowed us on "Late Show." Check out the below clip of his most recent appearance with Letterman and let us know your reaction to the news in the comments.
