Apple music event confirmed: iTunes 9 to come together with The Beatles?

Apple has confirmed the date for next week's annual music announcement, amid the usual frenzy of speculation. Could it be that the Beatles will finally arrive on iTunes?

Listen: do you want to know a secret? Apple has confirmed the date for its annual music blow-out: invitations have gone out around the world to a 'special event' on 9 September -- next Wednesday. iPod and iTunes speculation is rife, but could the big news be that Apple will be getting by with a little help from its friends, The Beatles?

The actual launch will be held in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and beamed to a waiting roomful of pumped-up journos here in London. Kicking off at 10am Frisco time, the event will begin for us at 6pm. Keep it Crave for all the news.

The rumour frenzy is now an annual event on 9 September , with 10 September bringing a hangover of genius and disappointment .

iTunes 9 is a pretty safe bet. Let us know in the comments what you think we'll get, and what you'd like to see.

One interesting twist is that the event coincides with the launch of The Beatles' remastered digital albums, and the release of the Fab Four's Rock Band game. Some people reckon this will be the moment the two famous Apples decide to let it be, with tunes such as Hard Day's Night, I Am the Walrus and Helter Skelter finally available for digital download and on iTunes specifically.

It's not like Apple to share the spotlight, but when it comes to reflected glory it doesn't get much bigger than John, Paul, George and Ringo. We have to wonder why such an announcement would be tagged with a Rolling Stones lyric, however -- surely 'The Long And Winding Road' would be more appropriate...

Update: You can now read our full iTunes 9 hands-on report and download it from Apple's Web site
