With the football season under way and the Premier League kicking off next week, what better way to start our new series focusing on mobile applications than Sky Sports Football Score Centre? What does it do? Very much what it says on the tin: it's the Sky Sports football scores iPhone app.
What does it do?
Fire up the app and you get a giant picture of the man -- the legend -- Jeff Stelling. That would be enough for many, but there's plenty more.
From the app's home screen, which displays the day's biggest fixtures -- today it's international friendlies and qualifiers -- you can select news or a comprehensive fixture list. Each game offers live scores, text commentary, match stats, photos and a wicked animated teamsheet. Phew! In between games there's news and player profiles, with team line-ups on match day.
It's breathtakingly comprehensive, taking in every match in England and Scotland, assorted Welsh and Irish leagues, all the European cups, international games, the German Bundesliga, French Ligue 1, Swedish Allsvenskan, Turkish Turkcell Super Lig, Swiss Axpo Super League, Norwegian Tippeligaen... the list goes on.
Each page includes a scrolling vidiprinter, which you tap for latest scores, as well as Jeff grinning at you from the top corner, gawd love him. Tap the plus symbol on any fixture and you save it to My Scores -- complete with another neat animation -- where you can save the games you're most interested in.
A killer feature would be the option to save your team's entire fixture list in My Scores -- this Craver would never have to miss a Tranmere score ever again. Sky tells us that feature is in the works for the next update, before the end of the year.
App attack verdict
All-encompassing, slickly put together, and with a picture of El Stell on every page, Sky Sports Football Score Centre is pretty much all you could want from a football app. Unbelieveable, Jeff!
