Andy Murray Wimbledon win tops Olympic tweets

As Andy Murray became the first British man to win Wimbledon for 77 years, Twitter celebrations topped even the London Olympics.

What a day for British tennis. On 7/7 Andy Murray became the first British winner of the Wimbledon men's tennis singles title for 77 years -- and Twitter celebrations topped even the 2012 London Olympics .

In just 12 hours on the final day of the tournament, the nail-biting match was mentioned more than 3.4 million times on Twitter, hitting 120,000 tweets per minute as Murray hit the winning shots. That beats the personal best of the London Olympics last summer, which peaked at 116,000 tweets per minute.

Incidentally, the sporting highlight from the Olympic Park that prompted that previous record rate of tweets? The Spice Girls, in the closing ceremony. If that's not Broken Britain I don't know what is.

Fittingly, one of the Spice Girls was on hand at Centre Court yesterday to witness Murray take both Twitter and tennis crown. Victoria Beckham tweeted the picture above, handing over the mantle to Murray with more aplomb than Lennox Lewis had handed Murray last year's Sports Personality of the Year award, something Lewis acknowledged with his own tongue-in-cheek-tweet.

Shortly after hoisting the Wimbledon trophy, Murray's celebratory tweet -- "Can't believe what's just happened!!!!!!!" -- took under an hour to top a fitting 77,000 retweets and favourites.

Other tech highlights of this year's championships included live coverage on YouTube and tiny adverts on one player's fingernails that could only be seen by ultra high definition 4K TVs .
