Dell Inspiron 530
Reviewed on April 18, 2008
PC vendors have very few tricks remaining to differentiate their systems from the competition, which makes the built-in Bluetooth in the Dell Inspiron 530 unique. There's little else that makes this system stand out, but if you need Bluetooth in your budget desktop, we can recommend no other.

EVGA e-GeForce 8600 GTS (PCI-e, 256MB)
Reviewed on April 17, 2007
If you care more about HD movie watching than gaming and you need a new video card for the task today, we recommend a 3D card like this EVGA with Nvidia's newest mainstream graphics chip. Gamers can get more performance value from Nvidia's higher-end 8800 cards, but for anyone, it would be a good idea to wait to see what's new from ATI in just a few short weeks.

If you're looking for a cheap way to add dual-monitor support, eVGA's e-GeForce 6200 TC will hook you up. But stay away if you need 3D power.

Alienware Area-51 3550
Reviewed on March 16, 2006
Alienware's Area-51 3550 hits all of the requirements for Intel's Viiv platform, but it doesn't achieve the level of performance we've come to expect from the boutique vendor.

Reviewed on September 27, 2005
The Gateway FX400XL makes an attractive, well-priced PC for mainstream users, but high-end users may be put off by some of its configuration limitations and lack of expansion.

ATI Radeon X1600 XT (256 MB)

The 3D performance of ATI's Radeon X1600 XT is surprisingly weak, but its video features make it a sound upgrade to aid PC movie watching.

Polywell MiniBox 430AM2
Reviewed on June 30, 2006
It's at the expensive end of the back-to-school market, but the Polywell 430AM2 offers a lot of hard drive space and a decent set of components that should keep you going for several semesters to come.

The highly configurable iBuyPower Value Ultra can be set up to emphasize performance or price; this back-to-school configuration keeps a foot in both camps, but a better budget deal lurks elsewhere.

Alienware Area-51 7500 (Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700)
Reviewed on January 3, 2007
We'd like this latest quad core-equipped Area-51 7500 if it were about $1,000 cheaper. It's as fast as it should be, but other vendors have similarly configured PCs that can do just as much for significantly less. Alienware's trademark care in assembly is evident, but that's not enough to justify the cost.

The ABS Ultimate X8 features some of the latest high-end parts, but its performance falls short of other systems in its class. It's well built and offers plenty of expandability, but it could have used some more fine-tuning.

HP Pavilion d4600y
Reviewed on July 26, 2006
With more extras than the comparably priced Dell XPS 410, the HP Pavilion d4600y would clearly be the better bet for mainstream users looking for a high-end PC, if not for its down-market look and limited configuration options.
