Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 (Celeron M 1.73GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD, Vista Home Basic)
Reviewed on April 5, 2007
It looks more expensive than it is, and its performance is in line with other budget systems (read: acceptable for basic use), but weak battery life keeps the Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 from replacing a Gateway model as our favorite low-cost laptop.

Gateway FX530XT (Windows Vista)
Reviewed on February 15, 2007
We liked this system when we covered its Windows XP-based debut back in November. The big news here is that Gateway has added an option for Windows Vista. Unfortunately, it's an awkward time for high-end gaming PCs to use Microsoft's new operating system, and Gateway hasn't adjusted well. We'd stick with the older model.

Systemax Pursuit 4155 (Intel Core Duo T2250, Vista Ultimate)
Reviewed on April 20, 2007
The Systemax Pursuit 4155 is one of the least expensive Vista Ultimate laptops we've seen, but its previous-generation components and mediocre features aren't worth buying. You can get more for your money elsewhere.

Uberclok Ion
Reviewed on February 8, 2008
Thanks to its overclocked CPU and 3D card, the Uberclok Ion delivers excellent performance for its price. It also offers a reliable upgrade path due to its SLI motherboard. We also like its Web site. We'd like to see more from Uberclok before we make too strong a recommendation, but this system makes a great first impression.
