eMachines T5274
Reviewed on July 21, 2008
With stiff competition from other sub-$400 PCs, eMachines' T5247 has a hard time standing out. It will certainly serve as a basic productivity system, but other desktops will help you stretch your computer dollar even further.

eMachines T3642
Reviewed on February 11, 2008
eMachines nailed the $300-$400 desktop with the T3642. It has a faster CPU, a larger hard drive, and is generally more capable than any other system in this price category. We would recommend it over anything else out there for the same price.

Dell Inspiron 530
Reviewed on April 18, 2008
PC vendors have very few tricks remaining to differentiate their systems from the competition, which makes the built-in Bluetooth in the Dell Inspiron 530 unique. There's little else that makes this system stand out, but if you need Bluetooth in your budget desktop, we can recommend no other.

HP Pavilion Slimline s3020n
Reviewed on April 2, 2007
With new polish and a whole lot of bang for the buck, HP's new Pavilion Slimline s3020n leads the small PC field overall. The glossy black chassis, added expandability, and even a new keyboard make this system attractive both inside and out.

Shuttle KPC K-4500
Reviewed on May 9, 2008
Shuttle's KPC K-4500 has appeal as a prebuilt Linux PC for a tech-savvy owner to play around with or as a more or less accessible, basic computer to bestow upon a loved one (for whom you're willing to provide tech support). If you're aware of the potential pitfalls we recommend it, not least because it's so affordable.

Dell Inspiron 531s
Reviewed on July 18, 2007
Dell may not have the most bang for the buck in its new, trim Inspiron 531S, but it offers more options than the competition in this new, small-scale Windows desktop. For systems in its slimmed down class, we recommend it. For budget PCs in general, you can find a better deal if you shop around.

Acer Aspire M5100
Reviewed on March 25, 2008
For performance-minded shoppers on a budget, the $700 quad-core Acer Aspire M5100 is fast enough to make you think about spending more than you might otherwise. If all you need is a capable PC with a decent hard drive, you can get away with a less expensive dual-core system.

eMachines T5246
Reviewed on March 6, 2008
The eMachines T5246 is an imminently capable budget desktop, with pretty much every feature you'd want in a day-to-day PC. If you're inclined to bargain hunt you might find a better deal by a few dollars, but if you pick this one up you won't go wrong for the price.

Gateway GT5674
Reviewed on June 13, 2008
The Gateway GT5674 is a low-cost quad-core desktop that delivers excellent bang for the buck. The problem is, most mainstream users don't need four processing cores and can get away with a dual-core PC for even less.

eMachines T5230
Reviewed on July 2, 2007
We like this new eMachines T5230 quite a bit for its fast processor. Our main reservation is that other vendors have become more aggressive in adding features to their low-end PCs, and eMachines has opted for power over a well-rounded PC. Still, if all you need is a basic, able desktop, this is a great deal.

EMachines T6420 - Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2 GHz
Reviewed on February 15, 2006
The eMachines T6420 delivers major bang for your buck, including a roomy 200GB hard drive and upgradability in a fixed-configuration retail box. Still, we wish it were able to outperform the model it replaces.

eMachines T5048
Reviewed on September 26, 2006
Though it's a capable PC, particularly for the price, the budget eMachines T5048 starts to lose its appeal when you look at desktops that cost just $100 or so more. It's is a good pick if you need to keep to a strict budget, but otherwise we recommend spending a little more.

eMachines T3626
Reviewed on November 6, 2007
They don't call them budget PCs for nothing. If price is your first concern, the eMachines T3626 seems to offer the best computing deal for the money, but only thanks to its $50 rebate. If you can stand to spend $400 or more, you can get substantially more computer for your dollar.

eMachines T5212
Reviewed on October 3, 2006
eMachines T5212 is not our runaway budget winner, but it makes a strong attempt. It has better support features than its main competition and a less gaudy design. Its performance, however, is held back by specs that are either too slow, too old, or too small.

Apple Mac Mini Core Duo (1.66GHz)
Reviewed on October 10, 2006
If you're looking for a pure budget desktop and aren't too worried about looks, even this new updated Mac Mini with its 1.66GHz dual-core CPU is a hard sell. But if you want a small, innocuous computer for sending or receiving media or other files between rooms, no other computer offers the deal that Apple has with this one.
