Apple Mac Mini Core Duo (1.66GHz)
Reviewed on October 10, 2006
If you're looking for a pure budget desktop and aren't too worried about looks, even this new updated Mac Mini with its 1.66GHz dual-core CPU is a hard sell. But if you want a small, innocuous computer for sending or receiving media or other files between rooms, no other computer offers the deal that Apple has with this one.

EMachines T6536 - Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4 GHz
Reviewed on June 29, 2006
eMachines has had a great run with its budget line of PCs, but thanks to aggressive pricing from some lesser-known competition, we can no longer give it the budget PC nod. The eMachines T6536 will serve you well as a basic computer for now, but its weak underpinnings limit its life span.

eMachines T5212
Reviewed on October 3, 2006
eMachines T5212 is not our runaway budget winner, but it makes a strong attempt. It has better support features than its main competition and a less gaudy design. Its performance, however, is held back by specs that are either too slow, too old, or too small.

PC Club Enpower Sabre EN-SB7
Reviewed on July 10, 2006
The PC Club Enpower Sabre EN-SB7 is cheap and well crafted, but it serves up fewer features and performance than you can find on similarly priced budget PC competitors.

Polywell MiniBox 430AM2
Reviewed on June 30, 2006
It's at the expensive end of the back-to-school market, but the Polywell 430AM2 offers a lot of hard drive space and a decent set of components that should keep you going for several semesters to come.

HP Presario SR1910NX (Sempron 1.8 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 120 GB HDD)
Reviewed on August 18, 2006
The HP Compaq Presario SR1910NX is as strong a system as any other $400 computer, but that's not saying a lot. Spend a bit more--while still staying firmly rooted in the budget class--and you can push its replacement date back a couple years.
