Shuttle KPC K-4500
Reviewed on May 9, 2008
Shuttle's KPC K-4500 has appeal as a prebuilt Linux PC for a tech-savvy owner to play around with or as a more or less accessible, basic computer to bestow upon a loved one (for whom you're willing to provide tech support). If you're aware of the potential pitfalls we recommend it, not least because it's so affordable.

Apple Mac Mini (1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)
Reviewed on October 15, 2007
The Mac Mini remains unique as the smallest mainstream desktop, but competition from Dell and HP has narrowed the competition. If your goal is saving space or running two operating systems on a single desktop, the Mac Mini is a contender. If you'd rather get the best deal, there are better options.

Apple Mac Mini Core Duo (1.67GHz)
Reviewed on March 24, 2006
Apple packs more media-specific features into the Mac Mini to make an inexpensive and useful entertainment-room computer. It's tremendously easy to use, although it surprised us with poor image processing.

Apple Mac Mini Core Duo (1.66GHz)
Reviewed on October 10, 2006
If you're looking for a pure budget desktop and aren't too worried about looks, even this new updated Mac Mini with its 1.66GHz dual-core CPU is a hard sell. But if you want a small, innocuous computer for sending or receiving media or other files between rooms, no other computer offers the deal that Apple has with this one.
