The Toshiba D-R410 handles basic DVD-recorder functions at a budget price, but you can get better features and performance from Panasonic's DMR-EA18K, if you're willing to spend a little more.

The Zoom H2 is a fun, practical, and affordable tool for capturing interviews, lectures, and music rehearsals. Cheap construction and lackluster recording performance, however, make the H2 less than ideal for demanding professional recording applications.

The Ion LP2CD isn't the prettiest deck we've seen, but it's the most efficient way to transform your records into CDs, and does a nice job consolidating CD and LP playback into one device.

The Alesis ProTrack isn't the smallest, cheapest, or most-fully featured stereo iPod recorder we've seen, but the inclusion of phantom-powered mic inputs gives it a unique edge over the competition.

The Belkin GoStudio is an affordable and convenient tool for capturing lectures, interviews, and music rehearsals directly to your iPod. If quality matters, you'll need to forgo the iPod and spend a little extra on a standalone recorder.
