Though performance wasn't completely top-notch and we would prefer a more recent Android OS version, the HTC Droid Eris is a satisfying Android device that offers a nice contrast to the Motorola Droid. And you can't beat the price.

The HTC Touch boasts an innovative touch screen and sleek interface, but the lack of a sizable keyboard really limits the usability of this device. And despite the beautiful hardware, the Windows Mobile smart phone lags in performance and needs a bit more tweaking before we're ready to snatch one up.

While we're not in love with the design and would have liked some additional features, the real beauty of the T-Mobile G1 is the Google Android platform, as it has the potential to make smartphones more personal and powerful. That said, it's not quite there yet, so for now, the G1 is best suited for early adopters and gadget hounds, rather than consumers and business users.

If you can stand the Hero's occasional sluggishness, it's a fantastic smartphone packed with great features. We like its distinctive looks, and its innovative user interface brings Android much closer to being as fun and good-looking as the iPhone OS, while being far more customizable. Occasional lag and Android's rough edges mean it's not quite an iPhone killer, but it's definitely fighting in the same class.
