If you're dead set on a standalone Blu-ray player, the BDP-S350 has a small form factor, solid feature set, and relatively low price--but the PlayStation 3 is still a better value.

Though it doesn't stand out in any one area, the Sony Vaio CR510E covers all the bases--decent performance, long battery life, good size, affordable price--in forming a good bet as a back-to-school laptop.

Although it's pricey, the Sony DVDirect VRD-MC3 is a boon for anyone who has lots of old videotapes but less time or tech skills to digitize them using a computer. Even better, it doubles as an external DVD burner, so you can use it with your PC long after you've transferred all those old tapes.
