The compact speakers of Yamaha's YHT-670 home-theater-in-a-box not only mimic the sound of HTIBs with tower speakers, the sound can be upgraded down the road with better speakers.

Sony's DAV-X1 virtual-surround Dream System can unleash a full, enveloping sound from DVDs, but it's less satisfying with CDs.

Onkyo's affordable, full-featured CS-V720 is a great do-it-all option for bedrooms and dens that are too small for full-size home-theater systems.

The affordable Onkyo TX-SR604 offers solid sound and an advanced autosetup system, but you'll need to opt for the step-up model if you want more robust HDMI features.

Sony's CMT-DV2D microsystem sounds good and plays DVDs, but we'd prefer a multidisc changer to its integrated tape deck.

The JVC FS-GD7 minisystem incorporates a five-disc DVD/CD changer and can double as a USB multimedia speaker system--we just wish it sounded better.
