Although the 2009 Nissan Cube S features good design and performance for urban areas, it completely fails as a tech car. Move up to the SL trim, and useful cabin electronics become available.

With its sophisticated digital processor and car-specific acoustic output, the JVC KD-S100 is an innovative addition to the aftermarket audio world. Its limited availability and vague pricing restrict its appeal, but new car owners may well see it as a worthwhile means of significantly improving their in-car audio.

The 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander offers great technology without getting too expensive while striking a near-perfect compromise between emissions, power, and mileage. It's a practical car for a wide variety of uses.

The 2007 Ford Shelby GT is a retro-styled rocket ship that will appeal to driving purists. If cabin comfort is more important than 500 horsepower, look elsewhere. If not, join the back of the wait list.

We were very impressed with the 2008 Land Rover LR2, which combines solid cabin gadgetry with a luxury interior. And all this comfort rides on Land Rover's legendary off-road platform. At its price, it's a great value.

The Alpine CDA-9885 combines attractive styling and an easy-to-use music search interface with a host of expandability options, including HD Radio capability. However, those upgrading to HD Radio will have to deal with a clunky module and a hefty price tag.

The 2009 Toyota Matrix, when equipped with all-wheel drive, works as a practical car for people living in wintery regions. However, it forces some pricey technology trade-offs and doesn't let you have it all.

As a safe luxury cruiser, the 2007 Volvo S80 does all right. Its cleanly designed cabin has a nice feel, but this is no sports car, even when outfitted with the Sports package.

Although too big to maneuver quickly, the XC90 is a very practical car for people who need a lot of space. It's not flashy, but its base stereo sounds very good, and the vehicle has a feeling of quality.

The 2006 Honda S2000 is a pure driver's car, designed for those who think that cabin entertainment starts and ends with a short-throw manual shifter. Some bizarre remote controls and a cramped cabin are all but forgotten when the open road beckons.

The 2008 Honda Fit Sport looks good, but falls short of its potential. We want really good mileage and low emissions in exchange for a low-power engine, but the Fit doesn't deliver, and it has no interesting cabin tech.

Not the most practical car, the 2006 Volvo C70 looks very stylish with the top down or up, and its audio system is among the best we've heard. The navigation system isn't a very worthwhile option, since it usually can't be seen because of glare, and this car is not for the driving enthusiast.
