Although the 2009 Nissan Cube S features good design and performance for urban areas, it completely fails as a tech car. Move up to the SL trim, and useful cabin electronics become available.

We were very impressed with the 2008 Land Rover LR2, which combines solid cabin gadgetry with a luxury interior. And all this comfort rides on Land Rover's legendary off-road platform. At its price, it's a great value.

The 2009 Toyota Matrix, when equipped with all-wheel drive, works as a practical car for people living in wintery regions. However, it forces some pricey technology trade-offs and doesn't let you have it all.

The 2007 Nissan Versa S is a car for those who are happy to get from A to B without GPS or MP3s. For better fuel economy and a more enjoyable all-around drive, we highly recommend the manual transmission.

The Sony MEX-DV2000 justifies its price premium over other single-disc car stereos with its support for DVD video and its excellent audio output. While its SACD support is nice to have, it is of questionable value when on the road.

Although its dashboard isn't loaded with electronics, the 2007 Saturn Aura is a solid sedan with a decent stereo and has navigation and hands-free calling offered through OnStar.

The 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP looks--and drives--like a sports car. With its whirlwind turbocharged engine, great handling, and gorgeous looks, this mini-Vette is an ideal weekend getaway car--if you don't bring any luggage.

Not the most practical car, the 2006 Volvo C70 looks very stylish with the top down or up, and its audio system is among the best we've heard. The navigation system isn't a very worthwhile option, since it usually can't be seen because of glare, and this car is not for the driving enthusiast.

As an inexpensive people mover, the 2007 Kia Rondo is pretty capable, although the passengers will have to content themselves with a good audio experience for entertainment, while the driver will have to rely on maps for directions.
