Although the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee's technical options look good on paper, they don't all work in a practical fashion. It's a very powerful car, but that comes at the expense of atrocious fuel economy.

The 2006 Chevrolet Impala LTZ makes for a comfortable commuter and gives occupants a little low-priced luxury, but average fuel economy will pinch pocketbooks for longer drives.

The 2007 BMW 335i combines grace and guts to deliver a whirlwind driving experience. Aside from a flexible standard stereo, cabin tech is mostly a case of pay-to-play.

Our criticisms of the 2006 Acura RL are minor compared to all it has to offer. It's marketed as a high-tech car and delivers on all fronts, from live traffic on its navigation screen to cutting-edge driving technology.

The Alpine IVA-W200 is a stylish, all-in-one, in-car multimedia unit with some impressive audio and video compatibility and control options. However, DVD picture quality is not great, and the external Bluetooth module is more trouble than it's worth.

The 2009 Jaguar XF offers a lot of luxury for the money, with many unique high-tech touches and an exceptional audio system. But it doesn't always deliver on its apparent promise, with a run-of-the-mill suspension and navigation system.

Although we have some minor criticisms, the 2008 BMW 135i is, overall, an excellent car to drive every day or take out on the track. It scores big in performance and cabin tech.

With a six-figure price tag, you'd expect the 2008 Jaguar XKR Convertible to have it all--and it nearly does. Its refined cabin, elegant and advanced technology, supercharged V-8, consummate handling, and traffic-stopping looks make it an all-round winner.

You won't notice the 2007 Acura RL's shortcomings if you don't push it hard, and its cabin gadgets are very easy to use. If it weren't for the mediocre fuel economy, the RL would be a very good high-tech commute car.
