The Alpine PMD-B200 is a decent portable navigation system, with good Bluetooth integration and traffic services. But the lack of text-to-speech functionality and inefficient route recalculations doesn't make it worth the high price tag.

The Alpine Blackbird is a feature-rich vehicle GPS system and entertainment device all rolled into one sharp-looking package, but it hits a couple of roadblocks with its short battery life and sluggish route calculation.

The made-for-iPod Alpine iDA-X001 is a useful interface for bringing a digital-music library on the road. We like its stylish design and breadth of functions, although its user interface falls behind that of the iPod itself.

The Alpine IVA-W200 is a stylish, all-in-one, in-car multimedia unit with some impressive audio and video compatibility and control options. However, DVD picture quality is not great, and the external Bluetooth module is more trouble than it's worth.

The Alpine CDA-9885 combines attractive styling and an easy-to-use music search interface with a host of expandability options, including HD Radio capability. However, those upgrading to HD Radio will have to deal with a clunky module and a hefty price tag.

We were very impressed with the 2008 Land Rover LR2, which combines solid cabin gadgetry with a luxury interior. And all this comfort rides on Land Rover's legendary off-road platform. At its price, it's a great value.
