Samsung Transform comes to Sprint October 10

Sprint unveils the Samsung Transform, an Android 2.1 smartphone with a touch screen, a QWERTY keyboard, and the new Sprint ID customization interface for Android.

SAN FRANCISCO--Sprint today unveiled the Samsung Transform, an Android smartphone running Android 2.1. It has a 3.5 inch HVGA touch screen with 480x320-pixel resolution. We haven't had much time to play with the Transform, having just received a test unit, but can say already that the screen, while bright, feels resistive. It was a tad tacky in our hands.

On the hardware side, there's a front-facing VGA camera and a rear-facing 3.2 megapixel camera. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard is silver. What's unique about the Transform is that it's one of three Android smartphones that will feature Sprint's new Sprint ID offering. Sprint ID is essentially a package of content that customizes the Android home screens--five in this case--to configure everything from the theme, to widgets, to app shortcuts, and even e-mail settings. There will be 13 different Sprint ID packs at launch with more to come.

The Samsung Transform will be available this Sunday, October 10, online and in Sprint retail stores for $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. That is, of course, with a new two-year contract.

Sprint representatives told CNET they believe the Transform will be upgradeable to Android 2.2.
