RLX cuts skinny-server prices

RLX Technologies, a company that sells superthin "blade" servers, cut prices 16 percent to 31 percent, the company said Wednesday. A blade server setup arranges servers side-by-side in a single enclosure. In RLX designs, a total of 336 servers can be arranged in a standard rack by bolting in 14 enclosures, each 5.25 inches thick and containing 24 server blades. An RLX 324 with 6 server blades now costs $6,999, the company said. The same model with 24 blades costs $26,511. RLX uses Transmeta's CPUs because of their low power consumption. The company faces competition from larger server companies such as Compaq Computer and Dell Computer.
