Nokia phone unveiling in Berlin: Chapter one

I spy with my little eye, something beginning with N. Maybe it's a new phone; maybe it's not. We're going to Berlin to find out

It's astounding how many leaked product pictures find their way on to the Internet -- and even more impressive how quickly those images spread like wildfire across the bloggy plains of the Web. Unfortunately, these insider scoops aren't always legitimate and are usually the hard work of hardcore Photoshoppers with vivid imaginations and an abundance of time.

Ranging from flying laptops to iPod mobile phones, we've seen hundreds of virtual products rise and fall faster than you can say "Is that really coming out?" Once in a blue moon, however, a picture isn't just a case of smoke and mirrors and really is a snapshot of an unreleased product. The true difficulty lies in trying to distinguish between the real McCoys and the Charles 'cough' Ingrams.

Eight days ago, newmobile posted some pictures from the mobile-review site's forum and claimed that they were images of a new N-series Nokia called the N73 (pictured), which is based on the N70. Apparently, this handset will have almost identical specs to the N70 but feature a large QVGA screen, stereo speakers and a 3.2-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. This spec would be in standing with current trends for Nokia phones and their signalled move to QVGA screens and better cameras -- for example the N80 -- but Nokia isn't confirming anything.

Luckily for us, we don't have to wait too long to find out, as we're heading to a Nokia press event in Berlin for an 'unveiling' this week. Of course, we don't know what it's going to be, but if the Internet rumour mill is anything to go by then it's definitely worth a look. Since the Nokia event is tomorrow, we can't confirm whether or not the rumours are true yet, but we'll keep you updated as soon as possible. Watch this space for further information. -AL
