Exclusive mobile games on the way to Sony Ericsson Xperia Play?
Sony Ericsson's PlayStation Phone could be in line for some exclusive games from publishers such as Gameloft, according to a report, giving it more than just ports from the iPhone and PSOne.
Sony Ericsson is pulling out all the stops to ensure there are some exclusive games available this year for its new Xperia Play PlayStation phone. The Android-based handset is already slated to get PSOne games and ports of popular iPhone titles, but more could be on the cards.
'A source close to Sony Ericsson', quoted by Pocket Gamer, claims exclusive games for the Xperia Play are already in development, and expected to be released in the next year. The site tips Gameloft as one of the likely suppliers.
There are no other details on what games might be coming to the device. It sounds like Sony Ericsson is keen to make it stand out from the upcoming crowd of PlayStation-certified Android phones, though.
In the run-up to its unveiling last month at Mobile World Congress, the Xperia Play was expected to be the PlayStation Phone. Before its big reveal, though, Sony Computer Entertainment announced plans for something called PlayStation Suite, which will bring a variety of older PSOne console games to any certified Android handset.
The Xperia Play will have those games, and also a bunch of titles ported over from the iPhone, when it comes out in the UK next month, with T-Mobile, Orange, Vodafone and Three all having confirmed they'll be selling the device.
At the Mobile World Congress event, Sony Ericsson said more than 20 publishers had already signed up to make games for the Xperia Play, with more than 50 titles lined up for its launch. They include FIFA 10, Need for Speed, The Sims 3 and Guitar Hero. It seems some of the publishers are also working on exclusive games for the phone.
A reminder of its specs: the Xperia Play has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and an Adreno GPU graphics processor, with Sony Ericsson promising that 3D games will run at up to 60 frames per second. It sports a 4-inch touchscreen and a slide-out physical game-pad, and runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread software.
PSOne game Crash Bandicoot will be preloaded on the phone. Games are expected to cost between £5 and £10, and the device has a claimed gaming battery life of more than 5 hours 30 minutes.
