Motorola courts Android developers

Many handset manufacturers are working on Android phones, but few have been more active in the community than Motorola. Instead of focusing on the details of their upcoming handsets, Motorola has spent much of its time recruiting developers and building the community. This coming October, Motorola will host the Motodev Summit which will highlight all their resources available to developers and provide a first look at the company's upcoming Android-based phones.

At the Motodev Summit, Motorola should unveil its plans for the remainder of the year and show its two expected Android phones (Sholes and Morrison). Developers will get hands-on time with Motorola Android-based handsets in the Tech Lab sessions.

Developers will have their choice of more than 20 sessions to attend. Topics range from funding your business, optimizing your applications for Motorola handsets, and delivering Android enterprise experiences. Other events include a showcase with Motorola's Fast Track partners and a developer playground focused on open-source development of a different kind.

Motorola has leveraged all forms of social media in an attempt to build support for its upcoming phones. Users can interact with Motorola through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. A weekly podcast highlights interviews with Android developers and a blog covers the latest news on Android development.

Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile customers in particular should keep an eye on the summit as they are the likely carriers to get the Motorola Android phones this year. We could also see announcements of new Android phones at the CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment show, which takes place the day after Motorola's event. All of the major carriers will have exhibitions and are expected to offer Android phones this holiday season.
