Eee PC 1201K: Big screen, AMD Geode netbook
Asus has just announced another Eee PC but don't worry, this one's a bit different. It'll have a 12.1-inch display and it'll use an AMD Geode CPU -- a chip designed for use with media players, traffic lights and other embedded systems.
Asus has just announced an Eee PC with a difference. The 1201K will have a 12.1-inch display and will use a processor from the AMD Geode family -- a range of chips designed for use with media players, traffic lights and other embedded systems.
Its CPU, a Geode NX 1750, doesn't sound all that impressive on paper, particularly when compared to is Intel Atom rival. It's only clocked at 1.4GHz, rather than the typical 1.6GHz we're used to, and has a paltry 256Kb of Level 2 cache -- half as much as an Atom N450.
It's a bit of a shame, since the 1201K's 12.1-inch, 1366x768-pixel display could really benefit from a much quicker chip. It's the sort of screen that'd lend itself well to multitasking, high-def video playback and large-format image editing. Instead, it looks as if it could be limited to the odd bout of Solitaire and juddering its way through Youtube videos.
We've no idea when the 1201K will be released or what it'll cost, but rest assured we'll keep you posted with updates as soon as we have additional info.
