IBM is expected to demonstrate some of the Linux clustering capabilities it is building into its DB2 database at the LinuxWorld conference in New York next week. The new features in the forthcoming version of DB2, code-named Stinger, will include closer integration with Microsoft's .Net line of development tools and better tools for building Linux applications.

The upcoming version of DB2 will incorporate support for the most recent Linux kernel, version 2.6, which is expected to provide better performance and scale for clustered servers and 64-bit processor-based servers. IBM will also introduce a tool, called DB2 Partition Advisor, for automatically shifting and optimizing workloads across several database servers in a Linux cluster. In the first quarter of this year, IBM plans to make an edition of DB2 on Linux available for IBM's Power processors, which are used in the company's pSeries and iSeries servers.
