Sync issues after Safari 3.1 (.Mac, iPhone/iPod, etc.)

Two promising solutions.

CNET staff

Users have reported problems syncing various devices and data sets using Mac OS X's Sync Services after applying the Safari 3.1 update. Problems syncing iPods and iPhones, .Mac accounts and more have been reported.

In many cases, it appears that corrupt or otherwise problematic bookmarks or calendars may be to blame for this issue, though other data could also be to blame.

As a first course of action, try disabling Bookmark syncing for the afflicted application/device. If the sync runs successfully after this procedure, you know that a bookmark is to blame. Export all of your bookmarks by choosing the "Export Bookmarks" option under the File menu in Safari, then delete all of your bookmarks -- the problem should be gone, and you can re-import your bookmarks one-by-one or in sets, hopefully isolating the problematic item(s).

Another solution is to re-register the Safari sync client with Mac OS X's SyncServer. Launch the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities and enter the following commands, pressing return after each:

  • /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/SafariSyncClient.app/Contents/MacOS/SafariSyncClient --unregistersyncclient com.apple.Safari
  • /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/SafariSyncClient.app/Contents/MacOS/SafariSyncClient --register
