Style Sheets and Explorer 5.1: a follow-up Regarding our recent report of problems with style sheets in Explorer 5.1, Jeffrey Ryan suggest that the problem may lie more with the web page author than Explorer: "XML is case sensitive, and XHTML is a subset of XML. CSS is used as an intrinsic part of XHTML, and so to conform completely with the current standards, any CSS that does not adhere to the current standards, is the fault of the author, not the application rendering the code. In fact, XML is case sensitive to the point that it is lowercase only. So, to be even more strict, it would make sense that only lower case CSS classes and code would work and be recognized at all."

Update: Peter Fleck adds: "XML is case-sensitive but it's not required that XML elements be in lowercase unless that is how that particular XML is defined. XHTML, the XML flavor of HTML, is designed with lowercase elements required.

Update: Neville Hillyer replies: "My page has been validated to XHTML and CSS2 and consequently it is all lowercase. Still, IE 5.1 fails to render the table border. It is not only external style sheets but inline style as well. I went to considerable lengths to get the earlier Mac Explorer to render a table border the same as NS 4.x, only to find that IE 5.1 shows no border at all. The page in question is here - see table with date - bottom right. The non-style statements are required to maintain a degree of backwards compatibility with older browsers."

Linksys WAP router and AppleTalk Regarding our recent item noting a lack of AppleTalk support on Linksys WAP routers, Bryan Anderson confirms, noting an article in ibookzone.com, that file sharing is possible via TCP/IP.

Macally driver and Apple keyboard conflict? A reader reports potential conflict between the new Macally Mouse/Trackball drivers released about a week ago and an Apple Pro keyboard: "When the Macally Mouse extension is installed, the computer stops seeing pressed keys - so, for example, if I'm trying to cmd-click to do multiple selections, it doesn't work. The keys work, they just don't register anything except a single keystroke."

QT, OS 8.6, and Desktop Pictures Several MacFixIt Forums threads discuss a problem with QuickTime 5.0.5 and Mac OS 8.6. Apparently a conflict prevents desktop pictures from working: Won't recognize JPEG files, QuickTime upgrade 5.0.2 , and Weird Appearance panel won't load desktop pic. The following Apple Discussion Boards threads cover the same ground: Desktop Pictures won't display!?, Pictureviewer won't display pics, and Desktop Pics not showing. Michael Khaw and Mary Watson isolate the cause as the QuickTime JPEG Update 5.0.4 file. Removing it eliminates the symptoms.
