Microsoft Office 2004 11.3.4 (#2): Problems applying through AutoUpdate

CNET staff

The Office 2004 11.3.4 update does not properly apply itself via Microsoft's "AutoUpdate" mechanism for some users.

MacFixIt reader Ken Beck writes:

"Running Microsoft AutoUpdate on my G5 and MacBook Pro, both times AutoUpdate quit after apparently downloading the update, but didn't install it."

The obvious temporary solution for this problem is to download and install Office 11.3.4 via the standalone package available from Microsoft's Mactopia Web site. This, however, does not solve the problem of AutoUpdate defectiveness.

In some cases, downloading and re-installing the AutoUpdate mechanism itself can resolve issues with the component's ability to apply newly released patches to Office 2004.

In other cases, a property list issue may be to blame. Try deleting the file

  • com.microsoft.autoupdate.plist

from ~/Library/Preferences/, then quit and re-launch the AutoUpdate application and check for persistence of the issue.
