Free Wi-Fi on the Tube connecting 120 stations by 2013

One million Tweets, Facebook posts, emails and web pages have gone down the Tube in just one week. That's how many different requests have been going underground thanks to the newly installed free Wi-Fi on the London Underground.

100,000 passengers have gone online underground in the first month since the service was launched by Virgin Media and TfL. Free Wi-Fi is available in 41 stations, and will expand to 120 stations by the end of the year.

Free real-time travel information is on offer for anyone accessing the underground Internet, as well as free access to listings mag Time Out, music-streaming service Spotify and fillum site MyMovies.Net.

One downside is that you have to be in a station to connect to the web -- it works on platforms, escalators and tickets halls, but not on the trains themselves.

Still, Tube Wi-Fi is free and just requires an email address to sign up. There's no additional cost to passengers: Virgin Media is footing the bill during the summer, and will continue to provide free access for Virgin broadband customers once the nights draw in (and the Olympics are over). Other Internet service providers will be able to pay Virgin to offered the same service for their own customers.
