AT&T rumored to unveil HTC Aria on June 7

Has AT&T been secretly working on an Android phone with HTC? More importantly, is it seriously considering announcing the phone the same day Steve Jobs and Apple take the stage at Moscone West?

Is this the HTC Aria for AT&T? FCC

Rumors are swirling this week that AT&T and HTC are gearing up to announce an Android 2.1 device called the Aria.

The smartphone may be the one that was outed by the FCC in late April, but there is still very little known about the phone other than it will run the HTC Sense UI.

However, of all the days for the carrier to announce a new phone, I'd recommend against its rumored launch date of June 7 as that is the day Apple takes the stage at its Worldwide Developers Conference. Anything AT&T does is simply going to get overshadowed by iPhone news.

With each of the other three major players releasing new Android phones this summer, I get the feeling this phone might have been fast-tracked. Verizon's Droid Incredible continues to sell well and the hype around the Sprint Evo 4G builds by the day. Even T-Mobile is getting ready to launch its myTouch 3G Slide next month.

If AT&T wants to be taken seriously when it comes to Android phones, it definitely needs something better than the Motorola Backflip.
