Apple dominates first round of voting in our Greatest Gadget tournament
Apple is set for a clean sweep in our Greatest Gadget of the 21st Century tournament -- as week one of voting draws to a close, every Apple product in the running is looking strong.
We're nearing the end of our first week of voting in our Greatest Gadget of the 21st Century tournament -- in the early hours of Monday morning, half the gadgets in our shortlist will be culled, and hurled unceremoniously on to the tech scrapheap. And from what we've seen so far, it doesn't look like there'll be any Apple devices among those rusting on our 'disgrace pile'.
Indeed, every Apple product we've included in our shortlist of 32 life-changing, mind-bending gadgets is currently trouncing their respective partners. For instance...
The iPhone is currently squaring off against the robotic wrecking machine that is Robosapien, where it holds an impressive 89 per cent of your votes. We anticipate that'll change once Robosapien starts communicating wirelessly with HAL 9000, Skynet, ED-209 and the MegaTimer -- all members of the Awesome but Slightly Evil Robot Union (ASERU).
Elsewhere the iPad is roundly trouncing the Panasonic Lumix TZ series digital cameras, holding 78 per cent of the votes. That's a little surprising -- we seem to recall a definite air of disappointment when the iPad was released, but then it did bring about the tablet revolution we're all currently enjoying.
The iPod classic is thrashing the Sony PSP, again with 78 per cent of the votes. That's not all that surprising, and you won't catch us denying that the iPod classic is one heck of a gadget, but perhaps before the end of voting we'll see the PSP community rising up and voting in their thousands. Only time will tell.
The Apple iMac holds 69 per cent of votes against the Flip Video camcorder, and the MacBook Pro is maintaining a 72 per cent lead on the Motorola Razr -- one of the greatest mobiles ever made.
There's still time for an upset, but if current trends continue, it looks like we're going to be seeing a whole lot more of Apple's hardware in subsequent rounds. It speaks to Apple's power as a brand that not only is it the company with the most products in the running, it looks like every single one of those (very different) products has the power to go the distance.
