CNET covers the new models and concept cars shown off at the 2014 Geneva Auto Show.
The worlds highest MPG production gas car finally goes on sale
At the 2013 Geneva auto show, CNET's Wayne Cunningham gives us a look at the VW XL1, which looks like a concept car but is actually going to production. With its fuel-efficient motor, a unique seating arrangement, and some weight-saving materials, the XL1 could actually find some buyers.
If the auto's fuel efficiency lives up to the advance billing, VW likely will be able to say it makes the world's most economical car.
At the Geneva auto show, Volkswagen announced success in building a car that only burns 0.9 liter per 100 kilometers, or 261 mpg. The XL1 is the result of years of work in developing a 1-liter car.
Volkswagen states, "The Passat BlueMotion Concept is being presented (to show) just how fuel-efficient a non-hybrid, gasoline-engined mid-size sedan can be."
The new VW SportWagen on display at the New York auto show is based on the Golf and offers more room than the current Jetta SportWagen.
VW's XL1 was a 261 mpg hyper-efficient beast, but for the Paris Motor Show, VW is giving it a power boost to create this, the 168 mph XL Sport concept.
