Intuit QuickBooks Premier 2009 keeps the program's well-designed, intuitive interface, while adding a few new features. It's a worthy upgrade for people serious about online banking, and it remains the best accounting program for small business owners. However, Intuit should be more generous with customer support, particularly for setup issues.
Despite its lean list of improvements, QuickBooks 2007 remains a terrific small-business accounting package. Longtime QuickBooks users who haven't already upgraded to QuickBooks 2006 should leap to 2007 instead.
QuickBooks Premier 2006 is the best upgrade in years. Its slick new interface is the best in small-business accounting, and its accounting toolkit is easy to learn. Small but growing businesses should buy it.
QuickBooks Premier 2008 remains the top small-business accounting program. Its guidance for novices is top-notch, and it comes in a variety of editions tailored for specific industries. Version 2008 isn't an essential upgrade for QuickBooks 2007 users, but it's a good buy for users of earlier versions, and for anyone new to accounting software.

The well-designed QuickBooks Point of Sale Pro 4.0 is a cash register on steroids--a hardware and software system for managing a retail business.
QuickBooks Premier 2005 is an accounting powerhouse, but it doesn't warrant an upgrade for existing QuickBooks 2004 users.
An excellent accounting program for small businesses, QuickBooks Pro has plenty of bookkeeping tools for experts and beginners.
QuickBooks Customer Manager is a good way for small businesses to keep track of their customers, but it won't work so well for big groups.
QuickBooks Point of Sale is a slick, easy retail sales system that'll help small-store owners combine cash register sales with QuickBooks 2002 accounting. But small businesses that require detailed inventory work should wait for the next version.
