Lucent sells a unit for $60 million

Lucent Technologies has sold its division that creates a way to block unwanted signals from a telephone network to Massachusetts-based telephone equipment provider NMS Communications for $60 million in cash, NMS Communications said Monday. The deal, expected to close by year's end, also makes NMS the exclusive supplier of sound quality equipment for Lucent, according to NMS.

Premiere Technologies and CompuServe Interactive announced that U.K. customers will be able to get their email over the telephone. The users' email accounts are linked to Premiere's Network Management System platform, which provides a single access point to CompuServe's service. Users instruct the NMS to fax the message, or read the message via a text-to-voice synthesizer, and reply by choosing a variety of standard responses.
