U.N. launches ozone-friendly B2B site

The United Nations on Monday launched a Web portal that allows businesses to trade so-called banked, or existing halons, which are human-made hydrocarbons found in fire extinguishers. Halons are 3 times to 10 times more deadly to the ozone layer than chlorofluorocarbons, also known as CFCs. The Online Halon Trader provides an international electronic exchange of banked halons and reduces the use of newly produced halons, which can damage the ozone layer, the U.N. said in a statement. Some in the industry say it is the first business-to-business Web portal to support compliance with a multilateral environmental agreement: the Montreal Protocol, which sets out to reduce ozone depleting substances.
